The last few years have brought about lots of interest (and removed the dreaded taboo) in smoothing wrinkles and anti-aging treatments. These treatments are now in high demand in the United States.
A couple of years back, only females in their 50’s and 60’s were looking to get these types of treatments; now, we see more young females (and plenty of males) in their 20’s and 30’s pursuing these as well. But there are still plenty of questions about what are the right treatments, appropriate ages, and just an overall concern for getting things done right. So I’ve decided to dispel these, and many more questions in this blog so that you can be an informed cosmetic patient.
For younger people this article will describe one of the best treatments aimed toward prevention to avoid developing wrinkles as they age. And if you already have some wrinkles you’d like to get rid of, this article will help you as well!
One of the most common questions that I have encountered recently is whether Botox or Dysport is better? There is typically a lot of concern about which product has better efficacy and lasts longer.
Botox has been in the market for many years and was the first product created to relax the muscles on the face and smooth wrinkles. Dysport has been in the market for a while as well but is more recognized in Europe, only being introduced in United States in 2009.
Botox and Dysport are botulinum toxin type A and work similarly in smoothing wrinkles, though they have different dilutions and dosing. Dysport units are cheaper than Botox, but the dosing is higher because there is a lower concentration of the effective toxin. The dose administered changes from patient to patient, of course, and depends on the recommendations of your physician.
My partner (Dr Cuberos) and I always perform a thorough evaluation of the patient’s face and go over how many units they will require to get the young look they want.
From research and our experience, faster results with Dysport have been reported 1 to 2 days earlier than with Botox in certain patients. We like to call this the “party option” as this may be an advantage if you have a party or a reunion where you want to see the effects quickly. Usually, you see the results by 2 weeks after the injections and both options last about the same time – 3 to 4 months.
But there are even more beneficial effects of Botox and Dysport. When patients undergo a series of three or four treatments, spaced at four months intervals, the effects become more prolonged up to 6 months. This is because the continual presence of Botox or Dysport in the muscle doesn’t allow it to contract back to its pre-treatment baseline.
So, although both options are very similar, there is one factor that will truly make a difference in your experience, and that is the person who injects your Botox or Dysport. The beauty industry is saturated with pseudo-professionals that are either, unfit to provide cosmetic services, or simply poorly trained. We have made it our responsibility to educate patients on how to choose the appropriate medical provider for their needs. Although we would love for everyone reading this blog to visit us here in beautiful SWFL, we know that our articles are read by patients everywhere, that is why we have prepared the “Beauty Done Right – The Guide To Finding The Perfect Cosmetic Professional“
Make sure you download it and read it before you even schedule your next cosmetic appointment.
Of course, our intention is not to defame any business or professional, in fact as medical doctors, our responsibility is to protect our patients, and the cosmetic industry, and the best way to do that is to inform and educate.
Overall, Botox and Dysport are both safe and effective anti-wrinkle options suitable for almost all adults, but one of the most important decisions when it comes to cosmetics is choosing a physician you can trust. If you are one of the lucky few that lives in SWFL you can schedule a consultation at Orchidia Med Spa and we can help you evaluate all of your cosmetic decisions right in our office.
