Understanding Laser Hair Removal

Laser Hair Removal

Let’s face it. Removing unwanted hair is a tedious process that no one wants to constantly repeat. The good news is that a treatment called laser hair removal can permanently free you of the burden of needing to remove unwanted hair by plucking, waxing, or shaving. In just a few treatments, we can permanently remove unwanted hair and have you back into your daily activities immediately afterwards.

Laser Hair Removal

We can permanently remove unwanted hair on your face, underarm area, legs, arms, or bikini area so that you can spend more time in enjoyable activities. We use a laser to direct thermal energy into the part of the hair known as melanin. Melanin is the pigment in your hair that gives it its color. The melanin will absorb the laser light energy, destroying the hair follicle in the treatment area, which prevents hair from growing there in the future.

Multiple Treatments for Permanent Hair Removal

You will need to undergo multiple treatments for the permanent removal of unwanted hair. The reason for this is that individual hairs actually grow in certain phases, and not all hairs are growing in the same phase at the same time. When hair is in its resting phase, the hair will fall out until its growth phase resumes. So only one laser hair removal session is not enough to catch each individual hair when it happens to be in its growth phase.

Best Candidates for Laser Hair Removal

Due to recent advances in technology, virtually anyone is a good candidate for this treatment. In the past, only those with dark, thick hair and light skin were considered optimal candidates. Nowadays, thanks to IPL technology, even people with blonde, red, or gray hair can be considered, and all skin tones are acceptable. Any qualifying factors can be discussed with you in further detail at your consultation.

Preparing for Your Procedure

In the six weeks before your laser treatment, you should avoid plucking, waxing, or electrolysis so that hair is present to be targeted by the laser during the procedure. You should also refrain from prolonged sun exposure for six weeks before and after your treatment, since this can lessen the effectiveness of the process or lead to complications.

Immediately prior to your procedure, we will shave down your hair to a level just above the skin’s surface. We then adjust the equipment based upon your hair color, thickness, and location, as well as your skin color. You may need to wear eye protection during your procedure.
