Our skin is the largest organ in the bodies, playing the part of protector from the outside world. It’s easy to take it for granted, but our skin keeps us hydrated, regulates our body temperature, prevents infection, and even protects our internal organs from ultra-violet (UV) radiation. With the constant stress that we put our skin through, it is no wonder that we see the effects as we get older.
Fortunately, there are things we can do to help maintain the health and youthfulness of our skin. But not only can we make changes in our everyday habits, now there are treatments, such as with Sciton BBLTM Forever Young, that literally turn back the clock on our skin’s aging process.
What Can We Do on Our Own to Stay Young?
One of the biggest sources of damage to our skin comes from the UV radiation of our very own sun. In addition to aging, there is the risk of cancer that comes with prolonged sun exposure over the years. Using a broad-spectrum (protective against UV A and B) sunscreen with at least 30 SPF blocks 97% or more of the harmful rays we encounter when in direct sunlight. Covering with clothing provides an even greater degree of protection, as does avoiding the peak times of strongest radiation between 10:00 am and 4:00pm.
Smoking is a major contributor to health problems, and not just for our heart and lungs. Smoking reduces blood flow to the skin, depriving it of oxygen and nutrients. It also degrades the supportive connective tissue within our skin, collagen and elastin. The end result is a loss of skin tightness and promoting of wrinkles. Smoking also increases the risk of many cancers, including squamous cell cancer of the skin.
The soaps and detergents we use on a daily basis can end up aging our skin more quickly. Stronger soaps remove the protective oils on our skin and lead to dryness and accelerated aging. Using more mild cleansers helps prevent these effects, while still working to clean the body. Using moisturizers and topical treatments routinely can also be effective in restoring and maintaining volume of our skin with the added benefit of sun protection, as many products contain SPF.
Our diets can similarly play a role in the aging process of our skin, much like the rest of our bodies. Diets high in sugar contribute to cross-links in our skin’s collagen and elastin fibers that lead to increased stiffness and reduced elasticity. What’s more is that these cross-links are irreversible, making prevention that much more important to avoid accelerated aging. Certain types of cooking may also contribute to this process, including frying, grilling, and roasting. Eating a plant-based diet with herbs and spices has been shown to prevent these effects, as well as prevent many other diseases in our body that contribute to aging.
Finally, stress in our lives leads to stress on our bodies. The skin is no exception to this. Making sure we take the time for ourselves leads to benefits universally in our health. Exercising regularly, getting adequate sleep, and mental regimens such as meditation or yoga all can contribute to our outward appearance, too.
What More Can be Done to Improve my Skin?
Sometimes our lives make it difficult to do what’s best for ourselves. For instance, here in southwest Florida, avoiding the sun can be next to impossible. So when lifestyle changes and preventative measures aren’t enough, we at Orchidia Medical Group turn to Sciton BBLTM Forever Young.
Reversing Aging with Sciton BBLTM
Intense Pulse Light (IPL) uses photothermal energy to treat skin conditions associated with aging, active lifestyles, and sun damage. Broadband Light (BBLTM) by Sciton is a very powerful form of IPL that has the ability to provide dermal renewal, permanent hair reduction, and the treatment of pigmented lesions and acne.
Sciton’s BBLTM Forever Young treatment repairs the effects of sun damage, delivering BBL to the epidermis and dermis and stimulating changes in skin tone, texture, elasticity and pigmentation. Forever Young BBLTM can even be used to prevent further skin aging over time when used regularly.
In one study, 15 patients ages 38 to 69 received at least one Forever Young BBL treatment per year for 5 to 11 years. Based on before and after photos, hundreds of evaluators estimated the age of each patient and perceived these individuals to be 10 years younger than their actual age.
The reason for this apparent regeneration of the skin with BBL may actually reach all the way to our genes. A separate study in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology found that BBL therapy promoted the repair of over half of the 2,265 genes involved in skin aging, returning these genes to their former younger form.
Forever Young BBL treats a wide variety of conditions. For skin rejuvenation, Forever Young BBL removes age spots, freckles, redness, small vessels and more. Forever Young BBL can also be used to reduce unwanted hair and control active acne.
